This Practice Direction advises how parties and representatives may address an adjudicator in an adjudicative event (e.g. mediation, settlement conference, case conference, pre-merit hearing, hearing, etc.). It also clarifies how parties and representatives can advise the tribunal of their form of address and pronouns.
An adjudicator may be addressed as "Adjudicator", or "Member / Vice-Chair / Associate Chair" as the context requires. Forms of address such as "Your Honour" and "Your Worship" should be avoided.
At the beginning of a proceeding when parties or representatives introduce themselves, their client, a witness, or another person, they may, if they wish to do so, provide the adjudicator with each person's name, title (e.g. Mr./Ms./Mx.") and pronouns (e.g. she/her, he/him, they/them) to be used in the proceeding. Participants in tribunal proceedings are not required to identify their preferred titles or pronouns.
