    The CFSRB wants to ensure that everyone is able to participate in its proceedings on an equal basis and will provide accommodation (alternate arrangements) for people who have needs related to any of the grounds listed in the Human Rights Code. For details, read the Tribunals Ontario Accessibility and Accommodation Policy.

    If you need accommodation, please let your case processing officer know as soon as possible so that we can consider your request without delaying your hearing. Tell us what you need in order to participate in the CFSRB hearing or mediation and we will work with you to make the proceeding accessible. If you need help making your request, contact the CFSRB.

The CFSRB cannot arrange these services for you. If you will be using a service animal or assistive device to participate in your hearing, notify the CFSRB in advance.

  • Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO)

    The HRTO wants to ensure that everyone is able to participate in its proceedings on an equal basis and will provide accommodation (alternate arrangements) for people who have needs related to any of the grounds in Part I of the Human Rights Code.

    To make a request for accommodation of a Code-related need, such as disability, write down the details of what you need in order to participate in the HRTO process, and email your request to HRTO.Registrar@ontario.ca. In some cases, the HRTO may ask for more information, including relevant medical records, to better understand your needs and determine how it can make the process accessible.

    Do not automatically send your accommodation request to the other parties. If the HRTO thinks your request could affect the rights of the other parties, then the HRTO will ask you to send them copies.

    Rules of Procedure

    The HRTO’s Rules include the SJTO Common Rules which confirm that the rules will be interpreted in a manner that is consistent with the Code. For example, parties may request flexibility in scheduling or timelines to accommodate a disability. The Rules also confirm that participants in HRTO hearings and mediations are entitled to accommodation of Code-related needs when requested.

    Interpretation

    The HRTO can provide interpreters, visual interpretation services, such as American Sign Language (ASL) and langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) and real time captioning at no charge. For more information see: Language Services).

    You can also request a recording of your hearing (See the HRTO’s Practice Direction on Recording Hearings).

    SmartForms

    The SmartForm Application and SmartForm Response make the process easier by helping you accurately complete the forms on your computer. The advantages of using SmartForms are:

    • SmartForms can be saved, printed and submitted electronically
    • SmartForms can be processed more quickly
    • SmartForms show you only the fields you need to fill out
    • SmartForms only ask you the questions that are relevant to your application or response

    Computer Requirements for Using SmartForm

    PC users: Complete and submit your SmartForm using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 8 or higher). You can download this free software.

    Apple Mac users: Complete and submit the SmartForm using your Safari browser. Do not submit the form using Adobe Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat Pro.

    To complete your SmartForm

    Step 1: Carefully read the Applicant's Guide or Respondent’s Guide for detailed instructions on how to complete the form.

    Step 2: Download the SmartForm by clicking on the Apply or Respond with SmartForm icon.

    Apple Mac users: Download the form in your Safari browser. If you saved the form to your desktop, make sure to open it with Safari before submitting it - you can’t submit the application directly from Adobe Reader.

    PC users: Download forms to your computer by right clicking on the PDF icon and selecting “Save link as” or “ Save target as” and then open the form on your computer.

    Step 3: Answer all questions by clicking on the checkboxes and typing your answers in the text boxes. Save your form as you go along. You can save your form and come back to finish it another time. You can also print your form at any time by clicking the “Print” button.

    Apple Mac users: If you have saved the form to your desktop to complete later, control (Ctrl) click on the Smart Form and open it in your Safari browser before submitting the form.

    Step 4: When you are finished, click the “Submit to HRTO” button at the bottom of the form. If a required section is not complete, the SmartForm will prompt you to add the information before you continue. Once you click “Submit to HRTO”, a securely coded copy of your completed SmartForm will be sent to the HRTO and a letter will appear in your browser confirming that the HRTO has received your application or response. The letter will include a submission reference number (e.g. 2015-11-06-10-10-428500). Print and save a copy of this letter for your records.

    Sending attachments (if applicable): Try to use the boxes on the form to provide the requested information. However, if you need to add attachments send a separate email with the attachments to HRTO.Registrar@ontario.ca. Include your submission reference number in the “Subject” line.

  • Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB)

    If you require an accommodation to participate in a hearing, or you believe the format will result in an unfair hearing (for example: you do not have access to a telephone, computer and/or the internet), please refer to the Request for Accommodation form. Please send this form to the LTB as soon as possible so that the LTB has enough time to consider your request before the hearing. You may send the form by email, mail, fax or courier.

    Other parties to the application will be able to see your accommodation request. If you are concerned about sharing sensitive medical information, contact the LTB.

    Interpretation

    The LTB can provide visual interpretation services, such as American Sign Language (ASL), langue des signes québécoise (LSQ) or real time captioning for people who have a hearing impairment. For information about interpreters for languages other than French or English, see Language Services.

    When a requested accommodation becomes unavailable, the LTB will let the parties know, and, if necessary, reschedule or relocate the proceeding so that it is accessible.

    The OSET wants to ensure that everyone is able to participate in its proceedings on an equal basis. It will provide accommodation (alternate arrangements) of Human Rights Code related needs as outlined in Tribunals Ontario's Accessibility and Accommodation Policy.

    If you require accommodation, note it on your appeal form or inform the OSET as soon as possible after filing your appeal. Advance notice will give us time to make the arrangements before your hearing.
