Canada Post Labour Disruption
November 15, 2024
Due to a labour disruption at Canada Post, mail services have been impacted at the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT).
For Automobile Accident Benefits Service (AABS) applications, parties are encouraged to use the e-File portal.
Applications submitted via email that contain credit card information cannot be accepted, as sending credit card data over email is not secure. To ensure the safety of your information, please use the secure e-File portal for any submissions that require payment.
Other correspondence or documents may be sent using the secure content service and received by courier or by email.
For parties without internet access and who cannot receive correspondence via courier, the LAT may contact them by telephone to assist in relaying essential information.

Updated Rule 13 and Recording of Hearings Practice Direction

Effective for all LAT-AABS and LAT-GS appeals starting on July 1, 2024, the LAT has updated Rule 13 of the Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules, 2023. The LAT has also updated its Practice Direction for Recording of Hearings:
The updated Rule 13.2 provides that the Tribunal may record its hearings. Recording of in-person and electronic hearings is for the limited use of assisting the Tribunal to carry out its functions and provide quality service. Recording of electronic hearings will normally be made using the recording function in Zoom.
The updated Practice Direction provides general information about the LAT’s procedures and expectations for recording hearings.

Category 2 Rules and LAT-AABS Applications

The Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules, 2023 began to apply on August 21, 2023.
The Information Sheet – Application Rules explains how the Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules, 2023 apply to applications. The application rules fall into two general categories:

The first set of LAT-AABS case conferences with Category 2 Rules in effect will occur in early January 2024. In preparation, the LAT has developed a new AABS-specific Practice Direction as well as new and updated forms.

Trust in Real Estate Services Act
December 1, 2023
Effective December 1, 2023, the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT) – General Service can accept appeals under the Trust in Real Estate Services Act, 2002 (TRESA). TRESA will replace the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002. TRESA regulations apply to real estate brokers and salespersons in Ontario. The Real Estate Council of Ontario is responsible for enforcing TRESA regulations.

Revised Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules in Effect
August 21, 2023
The revised Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules begin to apply as of August 21, 2023.
Each revised Rule is governed by an application provision that sets out when the revisions contained in that particular Rule will come into effect. For more information about the application of the Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules to your file, please review the Application Rules Information Sheet.
More information about the revised Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules will be added to the LAT website in the coming months.

LAT Revised Rules
July 21, 2023
Revised rules for the LAT will go into effect beginning on August 21, 2023. A copy of the Licence Appeal Tribunal Rules is available in English and French.
More information, including updated forms, will be posted on the Tribunal’s website in August.
Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act
June 22, 2023
Effective July 1, 2023, the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT) – General Service can accept appeals under the Towing and Storage Safety and Enforcement Act (TSSEA). TSSEA regulations apply to tow truck drivers, tow operators and vehicle storage operators in Ontario. The Director of Towing and Vehicle Storage Standards is responsible for overseeing the Act.
